- Argentina and Uruguay will play today for the 30th time in the history of the Copa America. In 29 previous games, 13 wins for Argentine, 13 wins for Uruguay and only three draws. Although they faced many times, the two teams, which are the biggest winners of the Copa America with 14 titles each, played only one knockout game. The year was 1987, the last time the competition took place in Argentina, when the local team lost by 1-0.
However, the confront has been decisive in several editions of the Copa America, as in the years of 1917, 1923, 1927, 1935, 1941, 1942, 1959E and 1967. Although the competition had a single phase, the match between the teams was crucial in these issues.
The game happened seven times in Argentina, with all the matches in Buenos Aires. Argentina won four, Uruguay won twice and the confront had a tie. The last time the two met in Argentina in the Copa America, was in the edition of 1987, above.
The top scorers of the confrontation are the Argentine Ángel Labruna and Uruguayan Héctor Scarone, with four goals each. In the last match between the teams, in 2004, Argentina won by 4-2. In that match, some players that are in this 2011 Copa America playerd, like Zanetti, Mascherano and Tevez on the Argentinean side, and Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Forlan, Diego Perez on the Uruguayan side.
