Brazil was higher during the regular time but missed a lot in the shots on goal. In the penalty shoot-out, after losing its four chances, Brazil was eliminated by Paraguay, which is in the semifinals of the 2011 Copa America. Elano, Thiago Silva, Andre Santos and Fred lost all the penalties in the penalty shoot-out. But the goalkeeper Justo Villar, highlight of the match, was the hero for classifying Paraguay to the semifinals.

To ensure the classification, the country suffered Brazilian pressure. The first half was totally dominated by Brazil. More offensive in the field, the team coached by Mano Menezes tried the goal throughout the first stage and was not threatened by Paraguay. At 3 minutes, Ramires took the first shot on goal from outside the area over the goal of Justo Villar. Then, at 6 minutes, took Neymar tried a volley but also knocked over the goal.

The striker had another clear chance to score in the 26th minute. Ganso made a great pass to Robinho, who rolled the ball and ended up playing for Neymar, who kicked out. But the clearest chance to score came on 31 minutes, when Andre Santos kicked a free kick by the left and Lucio, tackling, kicked over the goalkeeper Villar, who made great save. At the end of the first half, on 40 minutes, it was time to André Santos wasted one more chance. After string of a good ball from Ramires, arrived on the small side area, but missed the goal.
In the second half, the outlook of the game followed the same. In the beginning, at 3 minutes, in a Brazilian pressure, Neymar received, cleared the defender Da Silva, but Alcaraz saved Paraguay. At 9 minutes, again Neymar kicked, which passed close to the Villar’s goal. After that, the Paraguayan goalkeeper made a miracle to get two shots from Alexandre Pato, face to face, at 27 and 31 minutes. At 38 minutes, after a Robinho's corner, Fred made a head and Edgar Barreto saved, also with his head, on the goal line. The match ended 0-0 in the regular time.

In extra time, both teams felt the fatigue and produced little in terms of offensive. At the end of the first half, after a confusion on the side, Lucas Leiva and Alcaraz were expelled by the referee Sergio Pezzotta. In the second half of the extra time, the bid of danger, despite the Brazilian domain, was of Paraguay, with a shot of Nelson Haedo. Thus, the match went to penalty shoot-out.

But then shone the star of the goalkeeper Justo Villar. After Elano and Edgar Barreto lost the first penalties, the Paraguayan goalkeeper saved the Thiago Silva’s kick and then saw Andre Santos and Fred kick out. Secured victory of Paraguay by 2-0 on penalties.

The Paraguay squad now expects the winner of Chile and Venezuela in the Copa America semifinals, to be held in Mendoza, next Wednesday, July 20.
