Peru confronts Colombia and a taboo of 28 years

  • Peru plays this Saturday (16) against Colombia trying to break a small taboo to qualify to the semifinals of the competition: since 1983 the Peruvians doesn´t wins the Colombians for the Copa América. Nevertheless, the Peruvians have a large advantage over the Colombians. Of the 13 games played, Peru won six, Colombia won two and there were five ties.
    The two Colombian victories came at important moments of the competition. The first was the decision of the competition in 1975. In the first leg, the Colombians won, playing home, by 1-0. However, the title remained with the Peruvians, who won the second and third final matches (in Peru and in Venezuela), taking the title. Colombia's second victory came in 2001, in the quarterfinals of the competition, held in Colombia. That year, the Colombians would be the champions of the tournament.
    In the last match played between the two team at Copa América, in 2004´s first phase of the competition played in Peru. The game ended tied at 2 x 2. Solano and Maestri scored for Peru, while Congo and Aguilar, who at 2011 team, scored for Colombia. Besides them, players such as Acasiete, Vílchez, Farfán and Palacios played on the Peruvian side, while Perea and Murillo were on the Colombian side.
