Club official Horst Heldt hopes that the Netherlands international will be able to feature in their next match at Hannover after he was forced off the field on Thursday night.
Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has picked up a broken nose, and is rated as questionable for his team's upcoming Bundesliga clash against Hannover.
The Dutchman collided with teammate Joel Matip in his team's 0-0 draw with AEK Larnaca in Europa League Group J action at the Veltins Arena. Following medical tests, it was confirmed on Friday that he had broken his nose, but suffered no further problems.
After the match, S04 sporting director Horst Heldt feared serious facial damage and potentially an extended lay-off for his striker.
"We suspect he has a nasal fracture, possibly even worse. I hope that the cheekbone is not damaged," he told Goal.com.
Much to his relief, Huntelaar's cheekbone was intact following the clash. The striker's availability on Sunday is still not entirely certain, but if he is announced fit to play, he will wear a protective mask.
"If he misses the match on Sunday [against Hannover] it would be another piece of bad news this evening [in addition to the disappointing draw with AEK Larnaca]."
Schalke still sits top of Group J with eight points and are in second position in the Bundesliga, four points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
